América mía is a composition whose structure derives from Andean Latin American airs descended from the zamacueca, especially the Colombian bambuco, Bolivian bailecito, chacarera and cueca.
The song is characterized by the frequent use of sesquiálteras and syncopations; in addition to being a unifying factor of certain musics from the southern cone of America, this feature constitutes an element that connects us with the Iberian heritage. The song is conceived as a place of confluence of many sound practices of the continent that aesthetically seeks to invoke a continental spirit.
When writing it, I wanted to capture the spirit of Chabuca Granda, a woman of her time who understood her socio-historical moment. This understanding makes her message transcend her local environment, and people from all over Latin America and the world recognize themselves in it.
Chabuca described in detail places and people in such a masterful way that she universalized them. Like great literature, she captured the essence of what makes us deeply human, the feelings and experiences that transcend time and cultures. However, in doing so, Chabuca never loses her Latin American essence, a plural Latin America, which integrates into her music all her children of all origins, races, and social backgrounds; Thus, Chabuca's song becomes everyone's song, the song of an America full of beauty and contradictions.
